Case Study: Salauddin
Location: Charfasion Municipality, Bhola, Bangladesh
Sector: Transportation (Electric Rickshaw)
Support Received: BDT 150,000 (~$1,400)
Background:
Salauddin and his family are among the countless victims of Bangladesh’s worsening climate crisis. After losing their home and stability to natural disasters, they now live in vulnerable conditions, struggling to rebuild their lives.
Salauddin worked as a rickshaw driver, earning around BDT 11,000 (~$100) per month—barely enough to feed and shelter his family. Though hardworking and resourceful, he faced an uphill battle. His long-held dream of owning an electric auto-rickshaw—an upgrade that could multiply his income—seemed entirely out of reach. With a market price of roughly BDT 210,000 (~$2,000), it would have taken him nearly 20 years to save enough on his current earnings.
A Turning Point:
Upon learning of Salauddin’s aspirations and financial constraints, our team stepped in to help chart a path forward. Our volunteers worked closely with him to:
- Develop a realistic business plan
- Source the best terms from ethical rickshaw manufacturers
- Strategize how to leverage his personal savings and future income
We then provided Salauddin with BDT 150,000 (~$1,400)—covering the majority of the purchase cost.
Progress & Impact
- Electric Auto-Rickshaw Purchased: Salauddin is now the proud owner of an eco-friendly, electric rickshaw—a long-term asset that has already begun to transform his earning capacity.
- Increased Income: Though early in this transition, Salauddin is on track to substantially increase his monthly income, ensuring better nutrition, housing, and education for his children.
- Environmental Impact: By choosing an electric vehicle, Salauddin has also reduced his environmental footprint—contributing to cleaner urban transport.
- Community Connection: Through our network, he was matched with an ethical manufacturer offering fair terms, solidifying both affordability and quality.
Looking Ahead
Salauddin’s story illustrates the potential of targeted, well-timed support to change the trajectory of a family’s life. His journey from precarious survival to income stability is just beginning—but already full of promise.
We remain committed to providing ongoing mentorship and monitoring, helping him navigate this new phase as a small business operator and family provider.
We look forward to sharing updates on his journey as he continues to move forward—with dignity, confidence, and a vehicle of his own.
